Nike Zoomfly Flyknit

Training choice for the VaporFly.

Sizing: True to size (stretch to fit)
Insole: Removable
Arch: Don't need to use currex insole
Weight: 8.4 oz
Recommended use: Tempo, interval, faster paces

Pros:
  • Noticeable bounce from carbon plate
  • Snug fitting upper that takes time to stretch
  • Don't notice the weight (though some reviewers believe it is bottom heavy)
  • Use primary for less than 13.1 miles, but have used for over 17 miles
Cons:
  • Shoe lace doesn't stayed tied, need double knot
  • There isn't much heel outsole, so I am constantly applying shoo goo
  • Heel can feel unstable

The fit on this shoe required break-in.  Likely 1 run should dial it in.  I go for this shoe whenever I am trying to run faster paces (i.e., < 8:30 min/mile for me).  I like the cushion and the pop from the react/carbon plate.  I have used this shoe in this size with the OEM and the currex insole.

The carbon plate gives this shoe more pop than the Epic React and more protection in the forefoot than the Pegasus Turbo.  I am not clear this is the best shoe for hills, but I have used them on hill training.

I highly recommend this shoe for tempo/interval training.  Especially since it is on sale right now for under $100 (I got my 2nd pair for $65).

Comparisons:

Adidas Glide 8 - Zoomfly FK for the win on faster runs.  It is a lighter shoe with more bounce.  For easy, more relaxed or hill runs, the Glide 8.

New Balance Beacon - Toss-up except for hills.  I prefer the Beacon for hill runs.

Nike Pegasus Turbo - Beacon is the winner.  The Turbo's forefoot degraded after 150 miles and the shoe became unusable for running.  It is also a very soft, bouncy shoe as compared to the Beacon.  Outsole is also not as robust.  Additionally, it is significantly more expensive.

Nike Vaporfly FK -  VF FK for the win.  Under all usecases, the VF is the better shoe, except for price.Train in the Zoomfly, race in the VF.

Reebok Forever Floatride Energy - TBD.  Much potential as it feels like boost, is almost 2 oz lighter, and the upper is much simpler.

Skechers Razor 3 - TBD.  I haven't run the Razor 3 past 10K yet.  Normally, I go for the Zoomfly due to the fit, drop and consistent energy return.

Skechers Ride 7 - Zoomfly is the winner except for easy, hill and long runs.

20220206 Stryd Pod Calibration Change

So, it seemed obvious today that the pod was still off.  It seems to be reading short of the intended distance based on 7 mile circuit and initial readings on my 11 mile run today.  I feel like .20 miles short on 7 miles.  So .0286 miles off per mile.  Current calibration is 99.3.  Reset to 100.  Current calculations indicate 102.25

2020 December Shoes

So, had issues with the Alphafly on the long run, so redirected shoes for 4mm and consistency.  Testing: Nike Alphafly - one 13 mile run.  Caused some calf issues.  Likely the 4mm drop.  Had to buy a 4mm drop to prepare.  Will re-try after some miles on Kinvara.  Picked up a 2nd (in black) as the primary race shoe.  The white will be used for training. Salomon Sense Ride 2 - Got from ebay.  Firmer than the Pegasus Trail (in a good way).  Need to actually run in them now.  Like the cushion. Saucony Kinvara 11- Purchased for training of 4mm.  Not as bouncy as other shoes, but not too bad.  Firm, but cushioned. In Rotation: Atryeu - Like the shoe, but limited bounce. Asics Novablast - Very bouncy, but also a bit sinky.  Rotate with 1080 v10. NB 1080 v10 - Longer, easy runs.  Still weighs .4 oz over specifications. NB Rebel 2 - Rotated in after run fast retirement. Nike Pegasus 36 Trail - Over 40 miles on the shoe and sti...
