2020 December Shoes

So, had issues with the Alphafly on the long run, so redirected shoes for 4mm and consistency.  Testing: Nike Alphafly - one 13 mile run.  Caused some calf issues.  Likely the 4mm drop.  Had to buy a 4mm drop to prepare.  Will re-try after some miles on Kinvara.  Picked up a 2nd (in black) as the primary race shoe.  The white will be used for training. Salomon Sense Ride 2 - Got from ebay.  Firmer than the Pegasus Trail (in a good way).  Need to actually run in them now.  Like the cushion. Saucony Kinvara 11- Purchased for training of 4mm.  Not as bouncy as other shoes, but not too bad.  Firm, but cushioned. In Rotation: Atryeu - Like the shoe, but limited bounce. Asics Novablast - Very bouncy, but also a bit sinky.  Rotate with 1080 v10. NB 1080 v10 - Longer, easy runs.  Still weighs .4 oz over specifications. NB Rebel 2 - Rotated in after run fast retirement. Nike Pegasus 36 Trail - Over 40 miles on the shoe and still get foot aches in the first miles.  I wonder if it is the trails v

2020 October Shoes

Starting moving shoes around to minimize change as I ramp up for marathon.  Focus is on Alphafly, Next %, Speed, Run Fast and Novablast (though Speed can cover).  Testing: Adidas Adios Pro - Not sure if will be able to activate carbon rods. New Balance RC Elite - Multiple runs.  Seems to have pronation issues.  Might have to return. Nike Alphafly - 1 run so far.  No issues.  Likely to be my marathon shoe. Salomon Sense Ride 2 - Got from ebay.  Firmer than the Pegasus Trail (in a good way).  Need to actually run in them now. In Rotation: Asics Novablast - This shoe is interesting as the heel is noticeable.  Have had to adjust to feel comfortable. Nike Pegasus 36 Trail - Over 40 miles on the shoe and still get foot aches.  I wonder if it is the trails vs. shoes.  Will try with Sense Ride 2 to see if there is pain.. Reebok Run Fast - Really like this shoe as an alternate to the Rebel. Usually use for trail intervals as I don't want to chew up one of my less tractioned-outsole road sho

2020 July Shoes

Testing: Atryeu - Just got the shoe. Saucony Endorphin Speed - One run, and it worked well.  Bounce is different, and not much plate action.  Reminds me of the Accelerate. In Rotation: Asics Novablast - Break-in is going well.  It is mellowing out and the heel drop isn't as noticeable now.  Forefoot seems a bit too soft.  Maybe an issue on longer distances.   NB 1080 v10 - With 2 runs, the shoe is breaking it.  It feels very comfortable for long, easy runs. NB TC - Enjoying the shoe for faster runs.  Weight is noticeable at longer distances. Nike Pegasus 36 Trail - Still breaking in.  Some aches when in the arch at times.  Not sure if this is a break-in issue. Reebok Panthea - Enjoying this shoe.  1st choice for lightweight, non-carbon fiber shoe. Reebok Run Fast - Really like this shoe as an alternate to the Rebel.  Reebok Run Fast Pro London - One run, and seemed to work well.  The heel irritation was less of an issue once running at speed. Skechers Gorun 7+ - Still liking this s

2020 May Shoes

Testing: Skechers Gorun 7+ - I like the midsole and new upper.  That said, there seems to be an issue on the right foot with a callous/blister since the new material is very inflexible.  Feels better than the Razor 3 from an energy return perspective for my foot strike.  Will give it a few more runs before I decide.  The Panthea seems like a better choice (no fit issues, higher drop, and just as nice energy return). In Rotation: Asics Novablast - Had a $50 gift card, so it was this or the 1080 v10. Went with this shoe since I was really interested in the "bounce."  Drop is very noticeable in this shoe. NB 1080 v10 - It was a close call between this shoe and the Novablast. LeftLaneSports had a size 9 on sale for 30% off (cheapest I have seen this shoe) in the color I wanted.  Had to bite.  Will likely replace the Propel as an alternative to the Novablast.   NB TC - The best carbon fiber training shoe that feels like a Vaporfly.  Just a tad firmer, which is some ways ma

2020 March Shoes

Testing: Zoomfly 3 - Very stiff (even more so than ZF 2).  Leaning towards returning. Salomon Accelerate - Just getting in.  Will test. In Rotation: Adidas Boston 8 - Kinda enjoy this shoe.  Lots of bounce in the heel.  NB Rebel - Goto fast and medium distance shoe.  Likely to use more since max distances right now are around 13 miles. NB Propel - Goto easy run shoe.  I am doing less of this since most long runs include a progression or fast finish. Reebok Run Fast - Really like this shoe as an alternate to the Rebel.  That said, it is firmer.  Starting rotating it in.  I have a backup-pair I need to use too. Salomon Sonic RA 2 - Nice bounce.  But, there seems to be an issue with the right shoe in the little toe area.  Only noticed on last run (and I had 40+ miles already).  Will need to try again without over-tightening laces.  If I have issues again, will retire to casual use. Vaporfly 4% and Next % - Races. Shoes "in the wings": Adidas Solar Glide - Rotat

2020 Shoe Purchases (Rolling - January)

(1/5) Nike Pegasus 36 Trail - Have always wanted to try a trail shoe, but was pretty sure I didn't need one that could handle the technical trails in places like Colorado.  Focus on was on a hybrid shoe (road and trail), with potentially a GTX/Goretex liner.  My concern with GTX is heat.

2019 Shoe Purchases and Perspectives

Shoes of the Year (in no order): Vaporfly Next %  - My favorite racing shoe.  Saving for marathon distances as my 4% works for shorter races.  Doesn't cause forefoot fatigue like the 4% at longer distances. 1080 v9  - My favorite long run shoe.  Nice cushioning, though not as much bounce as newer foams. Hoka Carbon X  - Surprise long run shoe.  Plate doesn't bounce like Vaporfly, but the shoe has lots of cushion. New Balance Rebel  - Enjoy this shoe as an alternative to the Razor 3.  Not sure why, but it works well as an all-around choice.   This is the complete list of shoes that were purchased/tried in 2019.  I have enough shoes in rotation at this point I am really going to try to avoid buying shoes in the spring of 2020 until I retire some.  Currently targeting 200-300 miles to retire shoes.  Lower miles for eva shoes, but making some exceptions for 1080v9, for example.  Colors: Blue - recommend, Yellow - not sure, Red - Don't recommend.
